Training Tip & Bonus Biscuit 07/07/17

When you have stopped for refreshments, teach your dog to lie down and not wander over to other dogs who may be in the area.

Being able to take your dog out on days out and enjoy the activities together is so much more fun that all the family can enjoy.
These activities may include dog shows, country fairs, seaside visits, country walks, and so on. With some if not all of the activities dogs are now being allowed in farm shops, cafes, pubs, coffee houses, etc. Teaching your dog to lie down and relax in these environments is not only part of doggy etiquette. So here are a few points to consider when you have stopped with your dog for some light refreshments:

  • Get out a towel or mat and place this on the floor – this is a great visual for your dog to go to.
  • Teach your dog to lie down on the towel or mat – use this as part of your training.  Teach your dog what to do and use phrases such as “go to bed” or “go to mat”.
  • Teach your dog to lie down on the towel or mat.
  • Teach your dog it is enjoyable to relax on the towel or mat with a tasty treat, filled kong or a tasty chew.
  • Have a small travel water bowl so that you dog can have its own bowl of water rather than waiting its turn to share a communal bowl.
  • Teach your dog to stay there until you are ready to move. Build this time up slowly.
  • Keep an eye on your dog and if it is feeling uncomfortable, then move to an area where your dog has more space.

What not to do:

  • Do not allow your dog wander around the area even if it is on lead (especially an extending lead – these can get caught up and can trip people up).
  • Do not allow your dog to go up to other dogs in this environment the space will be cramped and can cause any dog to react.
  • Do not allow your dog to go up to other people, they may be many reasons they may not like a dog approaching them.
  • Do not allow children to come up to your dog in these areas. Your dog may feel trapped and anxious.
  • Be responsible for your dog and their actions.
  • Remember we can all enjoy days out with dog(s) following these simple rules.
