Bonus Biscuit 14/04/17

dog training tipPlay games that will keep your dog’s focus on you.

Last week’s training tip and bonus biscuit concentrated on focus and engagement. One cannot be taught without the other.

Once you have established focus it is important to keep the focus and engagement by not withdrawing the reinforcer(s) too quickly or too soon.

Playing specific games that will build on the relationship with your dog. These can include:

  • Chase the treat
  • Get the toy
  • Quick return

Each of the above games if played right can add fun and engagement to any training that can be played:

  • Before a training session.
  • At the end of a training session.
  • Any part of the training session.

Once your dog enjoys the above games you can begin to include focus games that can include:

  • Tactile play
  • Impulse control
  • Influence the dog’s level of enthusiasm.

If you want your dog to be focused on you and engage with you then the work you put in brings results with higher levels of concentration, attention and eagerness.
