Socialisation And Community Walks

Joining in with your dog on regular socialisation and community walks can be fun and stimulating for you and your dog. Many groups visit local parks, destinations, venues to help put all those training exercises into real-life situations.

The walks can be useful for a number of reasons:

  • Socialisation
  • Further training in more challenging environments
  • Confidence for owners to explore their countryside in a safe group

When walking with your group you should follow some doggy rules:

  • By law, your dog should always wear a collar and identification disc (ID) when out for a walk, even if your dog wears a harness and is chipped.
  • If you are asked to put your dog or have your dog on lead for the walk – make sure your dog knows how to walk on a loose lead. A dog that pulls on the lead will make arms, back and shoulders ache with the pulling, not to mention the injury to the dog’s airways, neck/chest and shoulders. Look at head collars and/or harnesses – make sure you get the correct advice from a qualified trainer as they will advise the right piece of equipment for you and your dog.
  • If the place you visit has joggers, hikers, cyclists – step to the side with your dog and put your dog in the sit to allow them to pass. It teaches your dog manners and it gives space to others.
Always clear up after your dog has been the toilet. Disease can spread through faeces that can transfer to humans and children.

Benefits of group walking:

  • Socialisation with other dogs on the walk. He will learn to walk either in front of the group or at the back or in the middle of the group.
  • Lots of interaction with other dogs – walking with different dogs throughout the walk.
  • Exploring new surroundings and helping to generalise the training in different areas – using training in real-life situations.
