The New Age Dog.

We seem to have a perception that our dogs should meet and greet every dog they see out on a daily walk. Why? Because they are dogs -no! Because they are social animals -no! Because they need to spend time with other dogs-no!

Do you as human being consider yourself wells socialised – yes? Do you introduce yourself to everyone you see on a daily basis: People in the supermarket, walking down the street, on the train/bus, and so on? The answer is no!

So why do we expect our dogs to do the same? Why do they have to? Where has the information been given to dog owners that it is important?

More and more the behaviour that is seen at the local park is inappropriate. Dogs charging at other dogs with the words “It’s ok he/she is friendly” or “he/she won’t hurt you” is no excuse and does not make it right for the dog to carry out this behaviour. Neither is stealing other dog’s toys when out on a walk with the words “he/she is always doing that” and then never being able to retrieve the toy.

How to teach your dog not to be a park troublemaker.

  • Learn how to play with your dog – so that your dog finds being with you more interesting and more importantly more fun.
  • Teach a strong recall. Make recall fun. Having a strong recall means that you can call your dog to you and prevent him/her getting into trouble.
  • If both dogs wish to play then supervise to make sure that both dogs are relaxed and having fun when they are playing.

Teaching these two life skills and supervising your dog when in the park will result in a more enjoyable walk, not only for you and your dog, but also for everyone else.
