Recall is a vital training command to teach your dog!

As we settle into holiday mode it is important to stay vigilant about your dog’s safety. While
your dog may be settled in daily routines at home, being away on holiday be aware of your
dog’s behaviour when you are out and about.
The following tips will help keep your dog safe when you are out and about:

  • Know when you put your dog back on lead: cliff tops, busy river waterways, walking
    through fields that contain livestock, busy roads, etc.
  • If your dog has a habit of jumping up when greeting people out and about, know
    that keeping your dog on lead if your dog is likely to run off to say “hello” to fellow
    holiday makers.
  • Be aware of how your dog attitude towards other dogs, not allowing your dog to run
    up to another dog or just allowing the approaching dog to meet your dog and hope
    things work out for the best.
  • Visiting different environments can be exciting to your dog, having a strong recall so
    that your dog does not run off is vitally important.
  • Teaching your dog a settle command will be of benefit if you stop off some lunch or
    dinner at dog friendly eating establishments.
  • Be aware extra titbits given to your dogs during the holiday, continuing with your
    dog’s same food will prevent any tummy upsets.
  • Being somewhere different and visiting new environments everyday can be tiring for
    us and for our dogs. Make sure that your dog has an area in the holiday home where
    they can relax/rest/sleep.
