Teddy’s Top Training Tip: Older dogs benefit from walks too: take your dog for three or four short outings each day to stimulate their interest.

Older Dogs benefit from walks too.

Taking your dog out for three or four shorter walks each day helps to stimulate his interest. Several short walks are better than one long one.

Type of exercise:

  • Walks that stimulate the sense of smell – lots of new and exciting areas.
  • New environments to explore – parks, beaches, river walks.
  • A steady pace of walk – no jogging, no forced route marches.
  • Games – but not so many that they have to turn quickly or stop suddenly – find some new games such as hide and seek.
  • Jumping too can cause injury – so discourage your older dog from too much jumping and not jumping from high places.

Types of play and games:

  • Agility – this may need to be modified for your older dog – but they too can enjoy some fun and around the agility course.
  • Swimming – lots of hydrotherapy centres offer “fun swims” which is excellent exercise for joint and muscle problems.
  • Walking – if you can incorporate some mentally stimulating games along the walk – meeting up with friends and their dogs for a leisurely walk.

Remember:

  • Access your dog’s capabilities for walking.
  • Adapt your dog’s exercise/walking accordingly.
