dog training tipDental hygiene for your dog.

Many owners will overlook the importance of dental hygiene for their dogs. Why? Gum disease, tooth decay is very common complaints not only with humans but also with dogs.
Dental care should be part of your dog’s daily routine. However, if this is not possible, then try to aim for at least four times per week.

Products to use for dental care:

  • Toothbrush – this helps with applying the toothpaste to all areas of the teeth. These can come in toothbrushes or finger brushes.
  • Toothpaste – look for the pet toothpaste as these are safe for your dog to swallow. Some work better than others, so read the ingredients and go with the ones that your vet recommends.
  • Dental wipes – these can be used to wipe away bacteria from the tooth – however, they are no replacement for brushing the dog’s teeth.

How to get your dog used to having their teeth brushed:

  • Get your dog used to having his muzzle, teeth and gums touched firstly without the toothbrush or wipes. Lifting areas around the muzzle to expose the teeth. Opening the mouth and popping a tasty treat inside will help the dog associate good things with this process.
  • Choose a time of day that is quiet and when you know that you do not have rush the process.
  • Get your dog used to the toothbrush – let them sniff and lick the toothpaste off the brush.
  • Over a period of time start to rub some of the teeth with either the toothbrush or finger brush – do not worry if you cannot get all the teeth – this you can build up gradually over the weeks.
  • Always end the teeth cleaning session by carrying out something your dog loves doing, for example playing with a toy, a special treat, etc.
