If you are taking thinking of taking your dog away on holiday with you, there here is a check list:

Before you go:

  • Make sure your dog is up to date with vaccinations, worming and flea treatments – it might be useful to take your dog to the vet for a check-up and take advice from your vet as regards any health tips.
  • Make a note of the holiday destination nearest veterinary surgery and an emergency one too – print off the details and keep them with you while you are on holiday.
  • Make an itinerary of your holiday destination. It is not just finding the right place to stay, but also finding out if café, restaurants, places to visit, etc are pet friendly.
  • Make a list of all things your dog will need for the holiday. It might be useful to sit down and write a list out, so that you remember everything. Most importantly take enough dog food with you to last the holiday, as you may not be able to find a stocklist of your dog’s food while you are away.

On your holiday:

  • Make sure that you have good control over your dog. Letting your dog off lead when you know he or she may not come back, can lead to all sorts of problems on holiday – either find a safe enclosed/secure area or keep your dog on lead.
  • Spilt your journey up in small manageable travelling times. This will help give regular toilet times, stretch of the legs, etc. It might worth considering stopping every couple of hours.
  • Once you have reached your holiday destination take your dog for a walk this helps relax them after the journey.
  • Stick to regular walk and feeding times. Try and take their blanket or bed with you so that they have something familiar to lie down on.
