Teddy’s Top Training Tip: Groom your dog regulary

Regularly grooming your dog will benefit his or her health in many ways:

  • Grooming maintains a healthy coat and skin.
  • Grooming can include trimming the nails – keeping the nails short helps with posture and
    reduces the risk of infection.
  • Grooming regularly may help in the early detection of any problems with the ears, skin,
    teeth and eyes, etc.
  • Regularly grooming will help detect any underlying diseases or conditions early.
  • Grooming your dog weekly helps with the bond between you and your dog. It does not matter how
long the fur, regularly brushing benefits your dog immensely.

What’s involved:

Mainly brushing as it will remove the dirt, dandruff, dead hairs from your dog’s coat. Brushing can prevent tangles and matting – which can be very painful to remove and can also lead to infections. Brushing also stimulates the natural oils in your dog’s coat which in turn will spread through the coat leaving your dog’s fur looking healthy and glossy. Brushing will also enable you to carry out an examination of the skin, which may hide issues such as fleas, ticks, dry or bald patches or swellings or any abnormalities of the skin or coat – you are then able to seek veterinary advice immediately.

Cleaning ears and eyes may be included in grooming your dog weekly, this will help you detect any abnormalities and/ or infections which can then be checked by your veterinary surgery. Dental health was covered in a previous tip and blog as this should be carried out daily and again prevents any periodontal disease. Trimming your dog’s nails can be carried out regularly by veterinary surgeries, groomers or owners. Regular trims can help prevent the nail from getting caught in carpets, upholstery or any other nail or foot issues. Bathing is another important aspect of grooming. Some bathing is needed to help your dog remain
clean and germ-free. Having a good relationship with your professional groomer and regular visits will help your dog stay
in top shape.
